Our tips for hiking in autumn

Days are getting shorter, leaves are falling, the rain too. No doubt about it: it's autumn!

But far from us the idea of packing up and wait until next spring to get some fresh air. Whether in terms of colors, smells, freshness, autumn is one of our favorite times to discover new trails.

But it requires to know how to choose the right places for this season, and to equip yourself accordingly. Here is our guide.

🍁 Pick a trail sublimated by autumn

First of all, it is advisable to choose a trail which looks great by the season. Concretely ? Deciduous forests are particularly suitable, as they offer an array of yellow, orange, brown and red in autumn. So look for areas with oaks, beeches, maples, ferns. Avoid pine trees, which are more pleasant in summer or in the heart of winter.

On the other hand, beware of trails near rivers. These are frequently muddy or even flooded after rainy days.

🍄 Combine pleasant with useful

What if the Sunday walk was also an opportunity to fill the pantry?

Mushrooms are undoubtedly the star of autumn! Ceps, chanterelles, morels... Varieties that populate the undergrowth promise a good harvest. Do some research in advance to know how to recognize edible species, and do not hesitate to show your harvest to a connoisseur or a pharmacist.

Chestnuts, walnuts and hazelnuts are also safe bets during autumn walks.

☔️ Check the weather

Autumn generally reserves beautiful sunny days, which will highlight the colors of the forests.

However, the weather can also be lousy or even downright dangerous in the event of a storm or flood. So before going out, check the weather forecast for the day ahead.

🥾 Equip yourself accordingly

Any hike requires to be well equipped, but it is especially important in autumn!

Key items of the season:

  • Rain boots, ideal for muddy trails
  • Warm and waterproof clothing
  • A knife and a basket if you are planning a harvest
