This stage marks the passage between the country of the Puys du Velay, with its open and hilly landscapes, towards Gévaudan with its more closed landscapes and its many forests. This is the land of "the fierce beast", which sowed terror for more than a hundred years before Stevenson passed.
The path crosses the villages of Langogne and Saint-Flour-de-Mercoire, before arriving at Cheylard-l'Évêque.
