Discover the Baie de Somme

Discover the Baie de Somme

National nature reserve, labeled Grand Site de France, member of the club of the most beautiful bays in the world... There is no shortage of distinctions to highlight the natural riches of the Bay of Somme. This 70 sq. km area, located at the mouth of the Somme into the English Channel, features large beaches, preserved dunes, and pretty seaside resorts. A setting not only popular with tourists, but also with birds and... seals!

So, without further ado, here are our favorite walks to discover the Bay of Somme.

The tip of Hourdel

Our first walk begins at Le Hourdel, at the foot of the emblematic white and green lighthouse marking the entrance to the Bay of Somme. A path allows you to follow the sea via the dunes and the beach, in order to observe the seals, many of which are often lounging. The return takes place inland, on a track alongside several small ponds.

It is advisable not to venture too far from the shore, both to avoid being surprised by the rising tide and to respect the seal habitat.

Le Marquenterre

Our second walk is located on the other side of the Bay of Somme, in the preserved nature of Marquenterre. A path there crosses a pine forest, before winding between the dunes then arriving at a large wild beach. A privileged setting where you feel far from everything, for a successful change of scenery.

Good to know: this walk is located a stone's throw from the Marquenterre ornithological park, ideal for bird watching!

Authie Bay

Then, we leave the Marquenterre to reach the Authie Bay, located a few kilometers to the north. Although smaller than the Bay of Somme, it also presents pretty landscapes made up of wetlands, dunes and beaches.

Here is a short walk to discover its charms, preferably carried out at low tide.

And to rest...

The towns of Le Crotoy and Saint-Valery-sur-Somme are ideal locations for staying in the region. They offer numerous hotels and restaurants, and are ideally located for various outdoor activities.
