It inspired impressionist painters, poets, writers... Today, the Fontainebleau forest also delights Parisian nature lovers!
Covering more than 25,000 hectares, it offers varied landscapes, witnesses of the sea (yes, the sea!) which stood there several tens of millions of years ago. There is sand, pine trees, as well as numerous sandstone blocks very popular with climbers.
We offer you a selection of hikes to discover this wonderful massif.
It is no coincidence that impressionist painters took up residence in Barbizon in the 19th century. This small village is located near the Apremont gorges, a setting made up of expanses of sand, valleys and caves, created by natural erosion. Make no mistake, the "gorges" have been dry for a long time - but the walk is nonetheless very beautiful.
Within the Trois Pignons massif, the fame of the 25 Bosses trail is well established. With a cumulative elevation gain estimated at 800 meters, it is used by hikers from the Ile-de-France region wishing to train for alpine trails. Stretches of sand, pine forest, climbing rocks, and panoramas also make it one of the most original hikes in Ile-de-France.
A more difficult variant exists: les 35 Bosses 💪
Departing from Fontainebleau station, this is an easy loop trail which provides beautiful views of the Pays de Bière. The path is marked in yellow, but the surrounding paths are numerous and it doesn't hurt to distance yourself a little bit from the route.
Here is another trail easily accessible by public transport, from Bois-le-Roi station to Fontainebleau station. It allows you to enjoy lovely views of the Fontainebleau forest, and has the advantage of never having to retrace your steps.
Departing from the Franchard hermitage, this trail allows you to discover the Mare aux Pigeons, the Houx gorges and Mont Aigu. Landscapes are varied, between viewpoints, pine trees, ferns and the numerous sandstone blocks of the Fontainebleau forest.
