This is a difficult there-and-back hike to ascend the Alex Knob Summit in the Westland Tai Poutini National Park. The trail begins in the forest with a steep climb, then the landscape opens on the mountains around and offers great sightings of the Franz Josef Glacier from the Rata and Christmas viewpoints. The trail is steep, with rocks and roots that keep the walkers on their toes. It’s best to attempt a very early climb so that the view at the top is clear, clouds tend to roll in at midday.
