The 6 most beautiful hikes in Ariège

The 6 most beautiful hikes in Ariège

Between Toulouse, Andorra and Spain, the Ariège Pyrenees present a magnificent playground for hiking. The landscapes are varied, between peaks close to 3,000 meters, dense forests, spectacular waterfalls, and numerous lakes and ponds.

With such an attractive environment, it's not easy to make your choice... So we stuck to it: here are our 6 favorite hikes in Ariège.

The cirque of Cagateille

Let's start with a magnificent hike within a natural glacial cirque. The landscapes are varied and water is present all along, with the Escorse stream and the Alet and Hilette ponds. Note the presence of refuges on the trail, for those who wish to prolong the pleasure.

The waterfall of Ars

From Aulus-Les-Bains, this path leads to the Ars waterfall. This consists of a first fall of 100 meters high, then several smaller falls, totaling a height of 246 meters. Spectacular, it is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Pyrenees. The return is via the pond of Guzet.

Mount Valier

Culminating at 2838 m, Mont Valier is not nicknamed the lord of Couserans by chance. Arriving from the Toulouse plain, it majestically imposes its presence in the heart of the Pyrenees chain.

A fairly difficult hike makes it possible to reach the summit, but the beauty of the landscapes is worth the effort.

The peak of the Three Lords

Here is a beginner's hike in a natural and soothing environment, with a passage through the Arbu pond. Then the path rises to offer a magnificent panorama, starting from the Trois Seigneurs peak and then from the ridge line that follows.

Fontargente ponds

Loop hike passing by the Estagnol pond, before joining those of Fontargente. An ideal place to rest for a few hours and enjoy an exceptional setting.

The Blue Pond

To end this top 6, head for what is probably the most popular hike in Ariège: the Blue Pond. A varied circuit between forests, Ariège high mountain landscapes and ponds. Again ideal for a picnic by the water, but watch out for crowds in high season.
