Of course, there is the famous Chartreuse, an ancestral plant-based liqueur of which only the monks have the recipe... But the Chartreuse is also a massif! Located between Grenoble and Chambéry, it offers unspoiled mid-mountain landscapes and beautiful contrasts between the dark green of the forests and the white of the limestone cliffs.
In short, an environment conducive to beautiful hikes. Here is our top 5.
The Dent de Crolles is a classic of the Chartreuse, being the second highest peak of the massif after Chamechaude. It offers a magnificent panorama of the surrounding mountains, after a rather sporty ascent. The ascent is via the Trou du Glaz and the descent via the Pas de l'Oeille.
From the Porte pass, here is a loop trail by the garden path, to reach the highest peak of the Chartreuse: Chamechaude (2,082 meters). Nice panorama on the massif, the Vercors, and Mont Blanc on a clear day.
This is a hike that is small in distance, but big in scenery. This loop between forest and torrent allows you to admire the many waterfalls of Saint-Même, within a circus dominated by cliffs 500 meters high. Stunning!
The majestic cliffs of Grand Som dominate the Grande-Chartreuse monastery, where the famous green liqueur is produced. This one cannot be visited, but can be observed by taking a little height.
Two trails allow you to reach the summit of the Grand Som, 2,026 meters high: via the monastery or via the Ruchère.
We end this top 5 with a short and easy ride to the hilly summit of Charmant Som. This offers a 360° view of the surroundings, from the Grande Chartreuse to Mont Blanc on a clear day.
